Term Two: Week Ten ~ An Early Finish Means Extra Holidays

We made it to the end of the term!  What's even better, we've worked so hard this term that EVERYONE finished a bit early!  YAY!  I have found that Term 2 is our hardest as far as motivation is concerned.  The weather is getting colder, and we struggle to put in the extra effort that we should... ALL of us... not just the boys.  But I'm proud of the effort we all made and thus we were rewarded with three extra days of holiday time.

At the beginning of the week, Monkey had this math page to complete, and his two page end of term review/test.  This was his first try of addition with trading so he found it a bit frustrating. It turns out that the directions in the book were confusing, so when I set him up with manipulatives, he finally "got" the idea and had lots of success.  YAY for the modern invention of Pinterest and the learning resources that are available there.

Left photo: Monkey using his manipulatives to work out each problem in the book.
Right photo: The wonderful addition mat that helped his "see" how the process works.

After all this he breezed through the page, then completed his test, and was thrilled that he was done for the term!!

A bit of work on the new puzzle one evening, and there was noticeable progress.

Thursday was our last co-op day with our friends for the term. The four older children spent some time making a Venn diagram to review the information they learned about Julius and Augustus Caesar.  They also made cardboard models of their arms to show how the skeletal muscles work, and they learned some new Latin vocabulary.  It was a good way to end the term, and they are looking forward to more learning together next term.

We finished off the week with a late afternoon play at our favourite park with our co-op friends!  This was the first time we had been there since they finished all the construction, and we were thrilled to see what had been added.  I didn't photograph everything, but there is a new big sandpit, some balancing logs, a musical area, and this fabulous water play station.  They have also added much needed additional parking, more covered tables, and a third BBQ! Despite the cool weather, and the fact that the sun was close to setting, the children were IN the water!!

The airborne shot of Munchkin enjoying the water feature! This will be wonderful in the hot weather this summer!

Some science and history learning with these two wonderful new books we found at the library!

More history learning with a picture book about John Flynn's radio system that allowed people in the remote outback of Australia to communicate with the larger cities in Australia, and a lovely book introducing children to Picasso and some of his most famous artwork.

Fun Independent reading selections for the older boys...

Munchkin's favourite picture books for the week...

We quite liked a Jeannie Baker book we checked out a few weeks ago, so I cleaned the library out of all her books and the boys are enjoying them.

More picture book selections for Munchkin!  I LOVE that there are new Rosemary Wells books to read... Monster LOVED the Max books when he was younger.

Independent selections for Monster... and his history read aloud for the week.

Term Two: Week Nine ~ Wrapping Things Up

We are well and truly wrapping up our term.  Week nine is generally our last week for spelling, handwriting, creative writing, grammar, and health.  This week Monster also finished a math chapter and worked through the chapter summary pages.  I knew we couldn't adequately cover the next chapter in just four days, so he was thrilled to hear that his term ended one week early. But of course that is only book work/written work.  Homeschooling spills into our every day life, so really the boys are almost ALWAYS learning something.

More hands-on maths pages to wrap up the term for Monkey.

Daddy took a break from office work and gave Munchkin a quick boxing lesson.

Diligently working through the chapter summary questions in math.

It was Munchkin's turn to use the pan balance while Monkey used the digital kitchen scales to work through yet another page.

All three boys were thrilled to return to co-op on Thursday.
This week they played with an Ancient Rome diorama...

Munchkin enjoyed some dress up time...

While the older children began an anatomy unit...

They loved finding their pulse on their wrist and then "watching" it with the help of a split pin/brad.

Independent reading for the two older boys...

Followed by read aloud selections for the Munchkin.
Bring on week ten and then school holidays - we are ready.

Term Two: Week Eight ~ Hands-On Learning, Mystery Illnesses, and Outdoor Fun

Per usual, as the term winds down, I find that I take less photos. But it doesn't mean we aren't learning, just that I'm being slack with one of my recording methods! This was an interesting week... Monkey came down with a mystery illness Wednesday afternoon which saw us missing out on our co-op learning on Thursday.  He had a low grade fever so half the day, and complained of a sore throat.  But by Thursday morning he was fine and no one else in the family came down with anything.  It turns out it can be a vicious bug... our best friends have come down with it... it has travelled through all the family members (except one) and it takes well over a week for them to fully recover.  Needless to say, I'm thankful that our family seems to have missed out on it.

This week thus became more about hands-on learning and reading, and we escaped to the park by ourselves on Friday so as not to share any residual germs we might have had with our homeschool group.

Monkey LOVES his hands-on pages in his maths workbook.  I promised him I would set up the volume page for him to do first thing Monday morning.  It required estimating (and then measuring) the number of litres of water that would fit in a variety of different containers.

My only other photos for the week are these not so great ones of our time at the park. The boys enjoyed climbing, sliding and crossing the monkey bars.  Monkey has learned how to cross monkey bars as well so all three boys are happy. The only problem now is that Monster is getting too tall for some monkey bars!

 Independent reading for Monster...

One of Munchkin's favourite picture books - I don't mind this one - but I do like to take a break from it now and again...

All three boys LOVE the three little pig adaptation (on the left) and we finished a dragonflies book as part of Munchkin's Letter of the Week program which we are behind in at the moment.

Munchkin's other favourite picture book... and my LEAST favourite... thankfully we have negotiated returning this to the library VERY soon to let some other children enjoy it!

Two more picture books that Munchkin enjoyed this week...

Monkey's independent reading (left) and a cute Native American folktale book that Munchkin enjoys (right).

Can you tell Munchkin likes the Maisy books at the moment?
