September School Holidays: Week One ~ Projects and Activities

It is officially the first week of school holidays and the boys and I are ready for a more relaxed schedule and time to enjoy extra special activities.

For me, this will also be time to work on planning. We will have our registration with the Department of Education sometime in November or December and I have a lot of paperwork to prepare before then. School holidays is the ideal time to get started on that big project.

More fun for Munchkin with the Creative Explained YouTube Channel.
Here he is mixing up ingredients (black tea and crushed egg shells) to make a seedling booster.

The boys also love school holidays because they get 60 minutes of computer time per day instead of the normal 30 minutes per day during the term.

How Monkey sometimes spends his early mornings.

Munchkin and his best friend have created a series of cards for some imaginative creatures they have designed - Munchkin is in charge of making the cards and this project kept him busy several days this week.

Munchkin spent some time reorganising his plants based on which ones he felt needed more sun. We also moved our pineapple plant (right photo) from the backyard to the front verandah. As they are a tropical fruit and thus a tropical plant, I reasoned that they need a LOT of sun. We don't get a lot of sun in our backyard, but the front verandah gets strong afternoon and evening sun so we'll see if the move helps the plant. We've only ever had ONE fruit from this plant in all the years we've been growing it. Munchkin also gave it some natural fertilizer that he created.

Another craft project. Munchkin asked me to reserve all the DK Lab books from the library. This is the Space book and he found a moon phases craft he could easily make.
NOTICE I have put a link on the words DK Lab books that takes you to another website if you are interested in seeing ALL the different books.

Wednesday a giant truck drove onto the grass in front of our house and dumped this GIANT pile of mulch. It turns out the landlord ordered it so we could put it on all the gardens around the property which will drastically cut down on the amount of weeding we have to do.

My husband and the three boys (the neighbour got in on the action too) worked in the late afternoons/early evenings and the landlord came over in the the mornings. The combined effort was AMAZING and the work got done quickly.

A School Holidays event at the library - these guys are ALWAYS amazing. This time they presented a Kitchen Chemistry event.

The first experiment involved Skittles in water...

The addition of a sugar cube gave them an interesting result...

Munchkin and his bestie were NOT interested in having their pictures taken.

The second experiment was food colouring in milk (full fat milk) with the addition of liquid dish soap... also interesting results.

Finally a colour experiment with textas... they put a patch of colour on paper towel and then soaked it in water to see the colours separate. Simple but fun to watch.

The final experiment was done by the presenter... Mentos candy in Coke

This was AMAZING to watch in person - I had only ever seen it done on TV

Different day... different library activity...

Loom band making...

We finished off the first week of library activities with Bingo on Friday! They apparently only offer Bingo ONCE per year now (main library decision not our individual library) and the kids LOVE Bingo so we made sure we were there on time. It helps that the "prizes" are lollies!!

Not much mulch left by the end of the week - hopefully people in the neighbourhood will help themselves to the little bit that is left.
