Term One: Week Four ~ Fun in the Sand

Week four started with a continued celebration of Monster's 15th birthday. A dear friend came over with gifts and delicious afternoon tea.

We started a unit study of the states and territories of Australia. We are reading aloud a book about the state/territory and it's capital city and then doing mapping exercises.

On Friday we enjoyed play time at the park with two of our favourite homeschool families.

Monkey is enjoying a unit study on ancient civilizations leading up to a bigger unit study next term on Ancient Egypt.

A large selection of picture books that Munchkin is enjoying this week...

Some of the non-fiction book I read aloud to the boys this week...

Some more picture books...

Chapter books that Munchkin enjoyed this week...

Munchkin is really enjoying re-reading the Pig the Pug book as a new book "Pig the Blob" was just released.

Term One: Week Three ~ Taronga Zoo Trip

Week three and Munchkin's foot is continuing to improve so life is slowly moving back towards a level of normal for us again. See the very end of this blog post for an updated photo of his skin.

Munchkin took a cutting of rosemary from the garden at our church and decided to try propagating it in his new gift from Monster's godmother.

Then he spent some time carefully planting some Lemon Balm...

Monkey and Munchkin working on handwriting at the dining table...

I spent some time one evening this week trying to get good photos of our new resident spider. Unfortunately she had built her web in a spot that was difficult to get close to and still hold my camera steady... But I'm pretty pleased with the photo directly above this typing...

I'm participating in a photography challenge group on Facebook that has a new theme every fortnight. The theme for this week is details so I had lots of fun looking for things to photograph. Raindrops on the rosebush leaves were one option...

And the bark on these trees at our selected homeschool group park were just BEAUTIFUL!!

We had a lovely time at one of the newer parks we enjoy with homeschool group! The big boys spent quite a lot of time seeing how many of them could pile on the web swing and still swing. They took turns being the grunt behind the pushing as well... I will take a wild guess and say that with the number and selection of boys on the swing this particular day - the total weight was hovering around 300kg/660lbs!!

Once the boys were finished the girls had their turn... it was much more subdued though!!

Saturday we took a trip to Taronga Zoo as a belated family outing for Monster's birthday! The weather was PERFECT and we really enjoyed the day out! After a quick lunch we spent some time in my husband's favourite part of the zoo - the reptile house!

This beautiful flower was another option for my "details" photography theme!

It has been awhile since I looked at the sundial so I decided to photograph it as well!!

When I first started taking Monster to the zoo MANY years ago we had a tradition of taking his photo with the Fennec Fox ears. The ears have been "updated" to these new mosaic ears (which the boys don't really like) but they agreed to have their photos taken on this particular day. Some were more enthusiastic then others as you can see from the photos!!

My husband could spend an entire day in the reptile house and I could spend much of a day at the zoo watching the Meerkats! They are probably my second favourite zoo animal after the gorillas!!

The chimpanzees had just been fed and were in their smaller enclosure hiding away from zoo visitors. Hopefully on our next visit they will be out and about in their large enclosure.

The Guinea Fowls have babies and they are SO cute!!

After asking a zookeeper and walking around the African Savannah exhibit for a second time, we FINALLY found the zebras AND got another view of the giraffes.

During a second visit to the Meerkats I spotted this red dragonfly! I couldn't get photos any closer than this (even with my zoom lens) but he was absolutely beautiful.

The gorillas had just been fed when we got to their exhibit so everyone was out and about. There is one fairly young baby (see the two photos below) who was entertaining to watch as he ran around getting into mischief.

I still acutely miss the old (retired) Alpha Male, but this guy is warming to me. He has found his place with all of the lady gorillas and likes to sit front and centre for everyone to view him.

Another tricky animal to spot - the camel!

Our last exhibit for the day was the saltwater crocodile. We intended to see a couple more animals, but we ended up visiting with some people at this exhibit and then ran out of time as the zoo was closing for the day.

As we headed out to the car park we spotted this water dragon sunning himself on a rock. He let us get REALLY close to him - which is always exciting.

We were pleased to spot the baby Tree Kangaroo in its mother's pouch as we left the zoo. On our way in they were hiding so we couldn't get any good photographs.

The very last photo for this blog post is an update photo of Munchkin's foot! It is improving nicely and the doctor and the nurse are both pleased with the progress.
