Summer School Holidays: Week Three ~ Happy New Year

Happy New Year to all my readers. Here's hoping that 2023 is a memorable year for you. We enjoyed a quiet New Year's Eve and New Year's Day at home as between Christmas and the New Year germs invaded our house. Not COVID again (thankfully) but rather some other junk bug as the normal germs are still around despite the on-going issues with COVID. So we watched the 9pm and midnight fireworks from home and then attended church as normal Sunday morning and then enjoyed a quiet New Year's Day relaxing at home.

We finished off this book on the last day of the year... I thought it was an excellent book but there were mixed reviews among the three boys. At any rate, it was an excellent way to get lots of nuggets of historical information.

We read three other Christmas books this week besides these two but I forgot to take "normal" photographs of them. You can catch them in my dedicated Christmas Picture Book blog post coming up soon...

Hubby and Monster continued working on the fish tank project this week. In these two photos they are cleaning the tank and peeling off the blue background that is on the back wall of tank.

Friday was a wild weather day. The temperature was absolutely FREEZING for January and it rained pretty much continuously from 6:30am until late into the night. We spent the day inside, bundled up in warm clothing, with all the doors and windows closed.

I ventured out during a brief pause in the downpour to take photos of these gorgeous mushrooms that are growing in our backyard.

This is another gardening project Munchkin has started that I forgot to properly document. Our next door neighbour has a beautiful rose and he offered us some cuttings when he pruned it recently. In this pot are two of the cuttings - you can see the bud on the right hand side of the photo, but there is also another stick on the left that sadly isn't visible from the angle I chose to take the photo. The good news with the project is that if it fails we can just get more cuttings from our neighbour. I do hope we are successful though because I have always loved their rose bush.

My beautiful flowers in our front garden were extremely unhappy with the rain.
Side Note: Since I last posted about these flowers I learned that the are called "4 o'clock flowers" because they open in the late afternoon and remain open all night long.

Munchkin spent a good portion of Friday wrapped in a blanket reading...

I took the Christmas tree down Friday afternoon and reclaimed our front entryway. This allows the boys and I much better access to the library/homeschool bookshelf and means the boys can work on jigsaw puzzles during our read aloud time again as well.

Although our tomato plant isn't looking particularly healthy, we have discovered another tomato growing and there are two more flowers as well. But with the much cooler than normal summer temperatures I have NO idea if we are going to get anymore ripe tomatoes to eat.

Friday night we watched a movie (Rise of Gru - not great) and Munchkin worked on his 3D puzzle that daddy bought him.

He worked well and did not get upset when there were some minor construction issues with the puzzle...

These photos are the wrong way around - the right hand photo is Munchkin's progress as of Friday night after the movie, and the left hand photo is the completed project on Saturday.

Munchkin enjoyed lots of independent reading time during the week.
Both of the older boys are doing daily reading but Monkey hasn't finished his two books that he is working on yet, and Monster just started a new e-book.

Despite the rainy weather I got some good walking in this week.
I also started my Yoga with Adriene January challenge and Monster has got me lifting weights daily as well.
