Term One: Week Four ~ Torrential Rain

With midterm quickly approaching, the boys and I have found our groove for this first term. Early morning read aloud time is going smoothly, lots of written structured work gets done late morning and early afternoon, leaving the late afternoon and early evening for free time and natural learning and/or computer time and online social time with friends.

Each week I try to showcase at least one of the boys working on their structured written work. This is Munchkin working on his weekly spelling unit. He is the only boy who has needed a spelling workbook but the program is working well for him and he is learning the spelling rules a lot better now.

After a sunny and warm weekend, late Monday night the weather changed, the heavens opened, and it started raining. By Tuesday afternoon we had a couple of rather bedraggled birds seeking refuge on our covered front veranda.

Munchkin, using my phone to watch some videos on Khan Academy that carefully explain the steps to take when multiplying a multi-digit number by a single digit number.

Some photos of the epic rain we received this week... I had some fun playing with the settings on my phone to give a better indication of just how much rain was falling, hence the two, very similar shots.

Thursday ended up being a sick day for Munchkin... he seemed to have a touch of a stomach bug. So he spent the day on the lounge, resting, enjoying clear liquids and bland food, and reading a huge stack of new books from the library.

We are just about finished with our "Australia's Asian Neighbours" unit study... This week we read about India and Monkey and Munchkin completed their notebooking pages. India was an easy country for them to notebook about given that their paternal grandparents are both from India.

Munchkin working on his India page... although the colour printer got fixed this week (enabling us to print the Indian flag) Munchkin chose the more creative option of colouring the flag and just gluing the emblem in the middle.

Another couple of shots of our rain - yes it rained almost non-stop EVERY single day. These show that often the storm drains struggled with the amount of water and therefore we would get some flooding across the road.

Thank goodness for online social interaction. Although we are no longer in any sort of COVID lockdown, the rain did an excellent job of cancelling our plans to meet up with three other families from homeschool group and hike the boardwalk near our house. So the boys spent some extra time playing online games with their friends and cousins...

I sometimes forget to photograph Monster these days... he does a LOT of his structured written work in the office independently and sometimes I get so involved with the work I'm doing in the dining room with the other boys, that I forget to duck in the office and photograph him working as well. In this photo he is busy working on his IEW writing assignment.

Independent reading for Munchkin... as he waited for our usual Thursday trip to the library he resorted to re-reading some old favourites.

Non-fiction read aloud selections for the boys. It was fun to read about the Hydro-Electric power scheme in NSW as they are currently working on an expansion. We are also really enjoying Monkey's Ancient Greece unit study...

We finished two literature selections this week...

This is an actual textbook that is available for loan from the library and it is an excellent book. I read it aloud to Monster and it gave us both a great overview of the Enlightenment and the thinking of the people during that time.

Two more non-fiction books we read aloud this week...

These books were suggested to me by a high school friend and Munchkin LOVES them...

Our final two non-fiction selections that we finished this week...

Munchkin is really enjoying have new books from the library. He borrowed books from four different series and he is a happy boy now.
