Term One: Week Six ~ Books, Books, and More Books

This week was all about books for our family. We read a lot of books this week, and Munchkin and I took a trip to our old library and picked up a huge stack of new books. I'm not too sure what the two older boys thoughts are about books these days (although I DO know they don't hate them) but Munchkin and I are passionate about books. We LOVE reading books and we LOVE having lots of books available TO read. The tricky thing is, Munchkin is such a fast and voracious reader, that keeping him well stocked with books is difficult.

We finished LOTS of junior non-fiction books that corresponded with unit studies this week. The food chain books are a bit below Munchkin's reading and comprehension level so we'll follow it up with an in-depth writing assignment on food chain and food webs and perhaps some other activities as well.

The Aboriginal food book is part of Munchkin's Food Technology elective. You'll see lots more books to do with all aspects of food (not just Aboriginal or Australian) throughout the year.

The Industrial Revolution book was park of Monkey's history study for this year. It takes longer to finish books that relate to his curriculum because a higher percentage of his books are adult non-fiction now.

Monkey won the library summer reading challenge for the teen age range and was gifted with some wonderful art supplies - the perfect prize for him. It took forever, but he finally agreed to pose for a photo with his prize so the library could put together a prize winners poster.

Thursday afternoon Munchkin and I went for a walk to the free little library further away from our home. The beautiful white flower on the right was blooming over the top of a fence of a house we passed. There were also beautiful pink flowers as well but the photos I took of those were too blurry so I'll have to try the next time we go.

When we got home we discovered that the frangipani we're growing in a pot is also flowering. Not the clearest photo, but I love the colour.

Friday Munchkin and I took a quick trip back to our old library to pick up another HUGE stack of books we put on reserve. The pram gets a good workout but we were easily able to bring all the new treasures home.

Our library bookshelves are looking nice now. The bottom shelf is all the chapter books for the boys to enjoy during their independent reading times. The top shelf is all our non-fiction for reading aloud. On the far right of the top shelf (from the Bible and Book of Virtues over) are the books we are currently reading aloud.

Saturday afternoon Munchkin planted his cucumber plants in a nice big pot.

They need 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day so we found a nice spot in the backyard that gets a LOT of sunlight. We'll keep an eye on them and move them if and when necessary.

Stay tuned for more updates on Munchkin's gardening attempts.

I got in a couple of good walks during the week.

Monkey snapped this gorgeous photo of our neighbour's dog that we love. He comes to visit us morning and evening when he is out for his walks. His name is Jack and we love him.

Saturday Munchkin and I walked to the local shopping centre to get some groceries and that always means an extra big walk and LOTS of steps.
