July School Holidays: Week One ~ Lockdown, Birthday Celebrations, Rain and Games

Our July school holidays, that were looking like they would resemble normal life, drastically changed on the last day of school. On Friday four council areas (similar to counties in the states) went into lockdown, followed by another announcement the next day that all of Greater Sydney was going into a snap two week lockdown. So that was the end of all our school holidays plans and we had to re-think. THANKFULLY we hadn't planned any trips anywhere (as some of our friends and family had) but it was still a change. NO school holidays events and the library, NO pupil free Lego day, and no ability to leave the house except for exercise (for the boys) - my husband is allowed to leave for work and both of us can leave to buy groceries and/or seek medical attention.

It also meant a shift in my thinking and planning for Term 3 as all the books I need for our history, geography and science units are now sitting on the reserve shelves waiting for either "click and collect" to begin again, or for the library to open fully. So once again, we find we are adapting and being super flexible with our expectations.

And of COURSE there was panic buying and toilet paper, pasta, rice, and feminine products flew off the shelves. What can I say? People as a general group are selfish and stupid.

Munchkin spent a good portion of Monday making salt dough creations as part of his birthday present surprise for daddy! They didn't quite bake as well as we had hoped, and we'll have to try again in the future, but it was a fun experience and Munchkin certainly enjoyed himself.

Munchkin and I baked a two layer cake for daddy to celebrate his 60th birthday. We had other ideas for how to celebrate his special birthday... NONE of which involved a lockdown... but we did our best to make it special anyway. In these photos Munchkin is mixing one of the cakes (left photo) and then the frosting (right photo)... aside from being in charge of putting the cakes in the oven and taking them out again, Munchkin did most of the work.

Munchkin worked hard for about two weeks creating, making and wrapping all sorts of special things for his dad's birthday. So it took him quite awhile to open everything and look at each item.

More cake making photos... Icing the two layers... and then a photo from after we ate some showing the layers (which in hindsight needed more frosting) and the sprinkles Munchkin decorated the top with!

The birthday boy as we sang to him and he blew out his candles...

To add to the changes of school holidays... the weather didn't cooperate at all. We spent the week cooped up inside as it rained every single day!

Munchkin and I spent an afternoon playing game together...

The boys are desperate to have the books that are sitting in the library... but we can't get them so they are having to make do with the books that we own. Munchkin spent an afternoon enjoying our Pamela Allen collection and our Graeme Base books!

Monkey is reading all of the Tom Gates books that were given to us by a neighbour...

The few library books that we do have right now are being read and re-read!!

More independent selections of Munchkin's

We finished the first book in the Narnia series as part of Munchkin's literature selections for the year! I am now reading the series for the fourth time and enjoying it even more than before!
