Term One: Week Two ~ Blessed Rain

This week the heavens opened and we got the much needed and fervently prayed for rain.

We got a first taste teasing of the rain to come on Monday...

Munchkin working diligently on his math...

This year we are blessed to be reading through this lovely devotional book that a dear friend gave the boys for Christmas. It is science focused and all three boys are LOVING it.

A few years ago I read aloud The Book of Virtues, so this year I decided we would work through the companion book.

We also read one chapter of the Bible aloud every day... we are currently working through 1 Samuel

Munchkin working hard to get his least favourite subject (handwriting) out of the way!

Puzzle progress...

My night photos of our resident spider were shocking last week... thankfully the spider found a better daytime hiding place and I was able to get these photos.

More puzzle progress... I am happy that the boys (well at least Monster at this stage) are back to working on their jigsaw puzzles.

Lots of people ask me all sorts of questions about HOW homeschooling AND housekeeping work! The answer isn't always easy, nor are my answers ever the same. It kind of depends on the season we are in at the time... for NOW... housekeeping works with the boys and I cleaning the house in a morning of working together on Saturdays (with a few little chores being done through the week to keep the place tidy). As for cooking... I often try to do some batch cooking on Sunday afternoons or a weekday when the schedule is light or we finish school work early. This particular week I cooked a MASSIVE batch of chicken curry and some hamburgers. The food lasted for about three full dinners and a couple of small lunches.

Monster has been wanting to plant his Venus Fly Trap kit for AGES... finally this week he got the chance to do that. He soaked the peat moss over night, then planted the seeds in the pot provided, sealed it in a ziploc bag, and set it on the dining room windowsill where it will get indirect sunlight to its heart content. Now he waits about six weeks for it to sprout.

While doing a BIG cleanup in the lounge room and the playroom, I found a bunch of drawings that Monkey had done over fourth term and the summer holidays. I have decided to start photographing all his drawings and keeping the photos in a file on my computer so that IF the drawings get damaged, we still have a record of them.

Our second week of the new school year ended with homeschool group getting cancelled. Friday morning the heavens opened and the rain fell. It fell, and it fell, and it fell... until Monday morning. Australia is the land of extremes... the country doesn't know how to do anything by halves. So after drought and fires and dust storms, we went immediately to torrential downpour, flash flooding and winds that brought down power lines and trees. Thankfully we had no flooding (aside from a little bit of extra water in the street) and no trees or power lines down in our area.

Our book selection for the week... above are a selection of books that Munchkin read independently for the week. He knows all the books by heart now so it doesn't take him long to read them... and he LOVES re-reading them.

 Independent reading for Monkey...

More independent reading for Munchkin...

Read aloud selections... Bushrangers is a unit study for Monkey and Urban Habitats is a unit study for all three boys...

I've also started (slowly) an Australian History unit study with Munchkin that will last for at least two years... we have started with Aboriginal history...

Munchkin LOVES the Tom Gates books...

Books for Monster... our literature read aloud on the left (we both LOVED it) and an independent book he read on the right - he LOVES the Horrible History series.

The Minecraft Zombie books are headed back to the library... final reading of all his favourites.
