Term One: Week Two ~ Full Work Load

In week two we hit the ground running and added all our subjects into our week. Along with the math and reading we did for week one, we added spelling, writing, handwriting, grammar, and Latin.  It was a busy week but we worked hard and did well.
This isn't to say that everything was perfect... there was much adjustment still as we got used to more structure and routine and less free time. But I'm mostly happy with how the week went.

Some extra excitement lately has been the addition of this beauty to the neighbourhood. This is a channel-billed cuckoo bird. They aren't usually found in our area, but this one has arrived and has made its presence VERY well known. It spends much of its day hanging out right outside our house screeching and crying for food.

Munchkin ate his lunch at the boys computer desk while also working on some math. We found a great new website (suggested to us by my best friend) and the boys are enjoying spending 30 minutes per day practicing their math facts and then fighting Pokemon style battles as part of the game portion of the site.
(If you click on the word "website" above it will take you directly to the website)

Monster and I enjoyed playing a long game of Monopoly that lasted for several days.

Each day, Monster and I sit side-by-side at the dining room table and work on our math unit for the day. See below for an example of our new textbook.

I switched to a different math textbook for Monster and I this year. It is a Queensland based company and I quite like it!

Munchkin working on his handwriting early one morning... I intend to go back to my rule from Term 4 last year, that early risers must start school almost as soon as they wake up. Giving free time in the morning often becomes problematic for everyone!

During afternoon read alouds the boys worked together on this 500 piece puzzle from Grandma. Monster placed the last piece one afternoon this week, and it was finished. Now we will tackle a 1500 piece puzzle together - also from Grandma.

Munchkin is doing really well with the newest level of Fitzroy readers...

I found a caterpillar on the dandelion plant in the backyard one morning. So I caught him and set him up in the bug catcher and we'll watch to see if he turns into a moth or butterfly.

We were able to have normal evening routine EVERY night this week, which means Monster got LOTS of work done on his puzzle. These shots are the nightly progress he made.

Finally for the week, we did a LOT of reading... If you find our book title portion of the blog posts boring, then just skim over this part. Above are some picture book selections for Munchkin...

Monkey read this as part of his independent reading for the week...

 More books of Munchkin's...

More read alouds for the older boys...

Munchkin...

Read alouds primarily focused on subjects for Monkey, though Monster listens to these as well and enjoys learning extra tidbits that we might have missed along the way with him.

This was Monster's literature selection... the ending made me cry but we both enjoyed the story. I hadn't read the book for at least 30 years so it was good to refresh my memory.

This book is part of a series I'm reading to all three boys...

Finally, two more read alouds for the older boys...
